Our Obedience
The Regular Grand Lodge of Belgium (RGLB) is the only Obedience in Belgium that belongs to universal and traditional Freemasonry. This is due to its absolute respect for the ancient rules (the Landmarks) of Masonic tradition as established since 1717. It affirms the existence of God, the Supreme Being, whom Freemasons throughout the world refer to as the “Grand Architect of the Universe.” However, they have complete freedom to define him according to their own understanding and spirituality, thereby creating unlimited freedom for the Mason in his spiritual or philosophical quest.
The RGLB has approximately 60 Lodges spread across the entire Belgian territory. The Lodges work in French, Dutch, German, or English, and even include one Lodge working in Turkish and another in Greek. Several different rites are practiced within the RGLB.
“Regular” Freemasonry, of which the RGLB is a part, prohibits all political and religious discussions in Lodge in order to ensure harmony among Brothers. The RGLB’s mode of operation is oriented toward an inner quest and personal radiance, transforming the personality of each of its members so that, ultimately, they may convey a message of humanity and love around them and thus contribute to the construction of the Temple of Humanity.
Although it respects a tradition dating back to the 18th century, its Masonic values are immutable and strikingly modern in a world that is losing its bearings. It is becoming increasingly important to work tirelessly to maintain or strengthen the conditions that enable human progress toward greater beauty, intellectual fulfillment, wisdom, and the realization of humanity—drawing strength from the chain of union among the Brothers.
Regular Freemasonry admits only men to Initiation. There are also Masonic Obediences exclusively for women, as well as mixed organizations.
Is Freemasonry a secret society? It is above all discreet, because Masonic work takes place away from public view, outside the turbulent external world, in the privacy necessary for working on one’s own self-improvement. Freemasonry has no secret other than that which is inherent in the initiatory method itself.
